Roots & Wings Onstage is a ninety-minute play that spreads awareness about mental health and inspires compassion and perseverance.

Honoring the calls of her ancestors, young Demetra embarks on a high school study abroad program atop a ship with masts and billowing sails. On the first leg of her voyage, she falls severely ill. Neglected in a dark bunk room for nine days, her childhood dream of sailing turns into a nightmare.

Abruptly, Demetra is flown home, where she endures unforeseen health problems and self-inflicted shame. Her life as an active youth is replaced by a period of fear, isolation, and suffering.

But this isn’t a story of demise; this is a story of transformation. Invoking her Greek heritage for strength, Demetra eventually rebuilds her sense of self. The creative arts further help her to heal.

Demetra skillfully weaves visual scenes, recalled conversations, and medical studies in ways that never lose the audience. Through her honest, human sharing of her own suffering, Demetra becomes an advocate for all who have suffered.
